Sports Eye Injuries and the Importance of Protective Eyewear

  • BY Zenni Optical

Did you know that more than 40,000 sport-related eye injuries are seen in emergency rooms each year? In addition, half of those people are 18 years or younger. The best way to prevent these injuries from happening to people of all ages is with protective eyewear that’s been tested by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

What Is ASTM Protective Eyewear

ASTM F803 has become the gold standard in sports eyewear, and is recommended by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Optometric Association, and American Academy of Pediatrics. Under the ASTM F803 designation, sports eyewear needs to pass a high velocity impact resistance test, including clarity and strength of the lenses. That’s why at Zenni all of our sports protective eyewear is tested under the F803-19 standard.

Who Should Wear Protective Eyewear

You should consider wearing eye protection for any sport that involves objects being used with high impact. Out of all the high risk sports, basketball, softball, and baseball are known to cause  the most eye injuries. Soccer players are also at risk because of the high velocity of the ball. The National Eye Institute (NEI) also has a list of other sports that put you at the highest risk of eye injury. Regardless of risk, the proper eye protection is recommended for all recreational activities and sports.

Protective Eyewear For Kids

Children ages 10-14 and 15-17 years old are known to have the highest rate of eye injury in sports and recreational activities. Three-fourths of injuries are typically sustained by boys. Appropriate eye protection has been found to reduce the risk of significant eye injury by at least 90%.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) classify basketball as a sport with high risk for eye injury. According to AAP, all athletes and their parents should be made aware of the risks associated with participation in sports and the availability of a variety of appropriate sports eye protectors.
