Summer Eyewear Care: Tips from Our Opticians

- IN How To
Have you ever looked at a pair of your glasses and wondered how the lenses got so many tiny scratches? Or noticed one day that your sunglasses don’t fit quite like they used to? A lot of our everyday activities can cause extra wear and tear on eyewear without us even realizing it.
For example, if you quickly wipe your lenses against your shirt to remove a smudge, the dust and debris on the fabric can leave small scratches. And resting your sunglasses on the top of your head may be the culprit for their change in shape, since high temperatures can cause your frames and lenses to soften and expand.
Eyewear Care Guide
To help keep your eyewear looking and feeling newer for longer, we asked our Zenni opticians for some summer care tips.
Tip 1. Never Wipe Dry
Avoid rubbing your glasses on a shirt or using a dry paper towel to remove a smudge. Dry, non-lubricated materials contain hard particles that can cause unwanted scratches.
Tip 2. Always Clean Wet
Use an optical spray and lens cloth to clean your glasses or rinse them with water and a mild dish soap. Individually packaged lens wipes are great for when you’re on-the-go.
Tip 3. Don’t Leave In Hot Cars
Never leave your glasses or sunglasses in the car during hot summer months. The heat can damage lens coatings and cause crazing, which creates a web of tiny cracks on the lenses.
Tip 4. Remove Around High Heat
Remove your glasses before blow drying your hair or grilling outdoors (or doing any activity close to high temps) to prevent heat damage.
